On Tuesday, May 17, the International Day of Arterial Hypertension is celebrated, from the Spanish Society of Pharmacology we present the Group of Dr. Juan Duarte of the University of Granada, who has focused his scientific research on the study of pathologies that affect to the cardiovascular system and specifically in arterial hypertension, comorbidities and in recent years in the influence of the microbiota in these processes<\/p>\n\n

Who we are<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

The \u201cCardiovascular Pharmacology of Natural Products\u201d research group belongs to the Department of Pharmacology of the University of Granada, the Center for Biomedical Research (CIMB), the Biosanitary Institute of Granada (ibsGRANADA) and the CIBER for cardiovascular diseases (CIBERCV). The PI of the group is Juan Duarte and it is made up of 5 senior researchers, 3 postdoctoral students, 3 predoctoral students, 2 youth guarantee technicians and 1 master’s student. It is part of the consolidated group of the Junta de Andaluc\u00eda (CTS-164).<\/p>\n\n

In recent years he has focused his research on 2 main lines:<\/p>\n\n

  1. Search for new targets for the control of vascular alterations associated with increased blood pressure in essential hypertension, obesity and systemic lupus erythematosus<\/li>
  2. Gut microbiota, immune system and hypertension<\/li><\/ol>\n

    Contributions of the group to the field of Research<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

    The main milestones achieved by our group have been the following:<\/p>\n\n

    1. Identify peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPAR)b\/d as new targets whose activation reduces blood pressure through genomic changes that reduce the vasoconstrictor response (increased expression of RGS5) and potentiate endogenous vasodilators (activation of SOD, CPT1, PDK4, and NADPH oxidase inhibition).<\/li>
    2. To demonstrate the participation of the immune system and the sympathetic nervous system in the modulatory effect of the intestinal microbiota in essential hypertension.<\/li>
    3. Demonstrate that part of the antihypertensive effect of some drugs is due to the improvement of intestinal dysbiosis.<\/li>
    4. To demonstrate the contribution of the intestinal microbiota in the appearance of endothelial dysfunction and arterial hypertension in mice with lupus of genetic origin (NZBWF1) and in lupus derived from the activation of the “toll-like receptor” TLR-7, through the modulation of the immune system gut and gut-brain communication.<\/li>
    5. To demonstrate that some probiotics prevent the development of hypertension in obesity, lupus, and essential hypertension by improving dysbiosis under these experimental conditions.<\/li><\/ol>\n
